About Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, muscle and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Upper eyelid surgery corrects the drooping skin that makes the eyes look heavy, tired and aged — and in advanced cases can impair peripheral vision. Lower eyelid surgery addresses the puffiness and under-eye bags caused by herniated orbital fat.

Surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids only, lower eyelids only, or both simultaneously (four-lid blepharoplasty). It is frequently combined with a browlift, facelift or mid-face lift for comprehensive periorbital rejuvenation.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Excess skin is removed through an incision placed precisely in the natural upper eyelid crease, making the resulting scar virtually invisible. Protruding fat pads can be removed or redistributed. The procedure takes approximately 45–60 minutes and is often performed under local anaesthesia.

Lower Blepharoplasty

The lower eyelid approach depends on the patient's anatomy. The transconjunctival approach (incision inside the lower eyelid) leaves no external scar and is ideal for younger patients with fat herniation but good skin quality. The transcutaneous approach (through a sub-ciliary incision) allows skin and muscle removal in addition to fat treatment.

Benefits

Frequently Asked Questions

Is blepharoplasty painful?
The procedure is well tolerated. Post-operative discomfort is mild and managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Cold compresses help reduce swelling and bruising in the first 48 hours.
When can I return to work?
Most patients return to desk work within 7–10 days. Bruising typically fades within 2 weeks. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 3–4 weeks.
Can blepharoplasty be performed under local anaesthesia?
Yes — upper eyelid surgery is frequently performed under local anaesthesia with sedation as a day case. Four-lid procedures may be performed under general anaesthesia.
