About Breast Reduction

Overly large breasts (macromastia or gigantomastia) can cause chronic back, neck and shoulder pain, skin irritation and rashes beneath the breast fold, posture problems, difficulty with physical activity, and significant psychological distress. Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin, achieving a breast size that is proportionate to the patient's frame and relieves these symptoms.

Dr. Efendioğlu performs breast reduction using the vertical (lollipop) or inverted-T (anchor) scar technique, selected based on the degree of reduction required. The nipple-areola complex is repositioned to a natural height on the new breast mound while preserving sensation and breastfeeding potential in the majority of cases.

Benefits of Breast Reduction

The Procedure

Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes 3–4 hours. The surgical plan is carefully drawn on the patient before surgery. Excess tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped, and the nipple-areola complex is elevated. Drains may be placed for 24 hours. Most patients are ready to return home the following day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose nipple sensation after breast reduction?
Temporary changes in nipple sensation are common after breast reduction. Permanent loss of sensation is rare with modern techniques, particularly when a pedicled nipple technique is used.
Can I still breastfeed after reduction?
Breastfeeding may be possible after breast reduction depending on the technique used. Dr. Efendioğlu discusses this during consultation for patients who plan future pregnancies.
Does health insurance cover breast reduction?
In Turkey, breast reduction is sometimes partially covered by insurance if macromastia is causing documented physical symptoms. Our team can advise on documentation requirements.
